The world of Kitchen design is fun and interesting for 2019. Brushed brass is the hot new metal of the year. Its always nice to have some metal in the room and with this trend we see it on custom hood trim, small appliances, handles, hardware, outlets, and facets.
Some fun is being had with backsplashes this year with 3-D tiles, funky designs, and mixing warms with cools in your palette. We are seeing texture in our backsplashes, along with pattern and color. Besides paint a backsplash is an easy and inexpensive way to give your kitchen a fresh new look.
We are still seeing the industrial-inspired elements like concrete surfaces and raw materials such as brick, reclaimed wood, and exposed beams. This is a renewed spirit in design it means people are appreciating the beauty of how things are constructed and a growing relationship between form and function.
Wine, wine, wine. We are accommodating a great deal of wine excitement in homes from wine cellars, to built in wine rooms, home bars, and beverage centers. Wine enthusiasts love to show off their collections.
The modern Kitchen Island has taken over as the “Heart of the Home” It is the focal point of the kitchen in many designs. It has beauty, uniqueness, and function. The island performs many functions from prepping food, to serving area, to homework time and everything in between. It can be a great place for storage and organization. If I could have only one custom designed piece in my home it would be my kitchen island. This year they are exciting and fun!
Kitchen storage is fantastic and more and more products are showing up so that we truly have a place for everything and it is easy to put everything in its place. We have built in spice racks, cutlery draws, hidden storage compartments, and tray storage. I have seen the toe kicks used, side space, and drop-down racks from the ceiling. There are ways to use every nook and cranny of your space.
During 2018 we have seen a surge of shaker style cabinetry  replacing the traditional styles and Shaker is not going anywhere with beautiful new colors and finishes. The newest trend is frameless European cabinets in many styles and colors. Many of these cabinets have places to organize your things built-in.

Abigail Pizzo Thorpe and Cynthia M. Cannizzaro met on the first day of architecture class at Louisiana State University. We became best friends immediately and remain best friends as adults. We both have had successful Interior Design Firms and exciting design careers and we want to share with you what we  have learned.
