6 Important Tips for Starting a Remodeling Project in Your Home

Cynthia Cannazzarro, President of One Design Place recommends 6 Tips for Success:

1. Be Clear About What You Want.

Decide whether you want a “facelift update” or a “total remodel” project or something in between.  Price differentials can be considerable and much can be done with simple updates or paint color changes.  Pull photos from design or home magazines, so you can explain clearly when getting estimates.  “A picture is worth a thousand words.”

2.  Design First, Build Second.

It is always good advice to hire professionals — an interior designer or an architect for larger jobs.  Paying a few extra dollars could save you money in the long run.  Mistakes can be expensive.  Having an actual design plan will keep your contractor on track and everyone on the same page.

3.  Choose Your Contractor Carefully.

Unfortunately, we all know there are unscrupulous people everywhere in life, so protect yourself.  Make sure the business is insured.  Get recommendations from family, friends, and neighbors.  Check out reputations on the many resources available, such as Next Door, Home Advisor, or Angi.  Have a clear agreement before giving any upfront deposit.

4.  Make Sure Your Contractor Fits the Scope of the Job

Different skills are needed for adding a closet or an island than are needed for a whole kitchen or bath remodel.  Sometimes additional craftsmen for specialty work are needed.  Know the capabilities of the contractor team.   Know the levels of labor pricing in your area.

5.  Consider the Middle Price Bid.

Sometimes the low bid is just that, a low bid is given to “get the job”. Then a situation may occur where more “add-on” surprises will be needed that could bring the price even higher than some of the other bids.  Learn about current prices in your area.

6.  Don’t Choose All High-End Expensive Finishes.

You can blend high-end products with inexpensive standard finishes to give an elegant, inspired flair and ambiance.  For example, use a basic builder-grade tile and use expensive marble inserts as a focal point for your kitchen backsplash or bathroom shower.

Follow these guidelines and you will have the start a smooth and trouble-free project.  Then you can enjoy the fresh new look of your home for years to come.
