Remodeling vs. Buying New

It always is a difficult decision whether to buy and move to a new home or whether to stay in the home you love and remodel.  You must decide what is best for your budget and for your family’s happiness.

Here are our Thoughts on Pros to Staying and Remodeling:

1. You already know and love the location.
If you’re happy with your neighborhood — the schools, your neighbors, your commute, your favorite grocery store — that’s huge. You can’t remodel location!

2. You get to design it exactly how you want.
When you remodel, you have control over the finishes, the layout, the functionality — everything. You’re not compromising on someone else’s taste or layout choices.

3. No moving stress.
Moving is expensive and exhausting — packing, selling, inspections, new utility setups — ugh. Remodeling means you get the transformation without uprooting your whole life.

4. Lower long-term costs (usually).
Even though remodeling has a price tag, it’s often still cheaper than buying a new home, especially when you add up realtor fees, moving costs, new furniture, and higher property taxes on a more expensive home.  If you’re one of those lucky people who have a very low interest rate, you’re also not going to get that kind of rate right now so you should consider that.

5. You can increase your home’s value.
A well-planned remodel — especially kitchens, bathrooms, open floor plans, the right flooring— can give you a strong return on investment. You get to enjoy the improvements and boost your equity.

6. Emotional connection.
There’s just something about the memories in a home. Remodeling lets you refresh it while keeping those sentimental roots intact.

7. You can choose to divide the project into phases.
You can remodel in phases, spreading the cost and disruption out over time, rather than dropping a huge amount at once like you would with a home purchase.
