Back to School –Keep Kids Closets Organized

We all want our mornings to go smoothly and with no stress, when the kids are heading out to school. Cynthia Cannizzaro, owner of One Design Place, tells us that organization is the key.

She advises us that when we get our kids involved in the process of getting their closets organized and ready for the school year, then our mornings will ultimately go smoother. Let them become engaged in the process and and they will appreciate the value of learning good habits.

Follow these 8 steps for easy organization and peace of mind:

  • Start with purging. Clear out clothes that kids outgrew and no longer fit. Your child can choose which dolls, stuffed animals, toys, and games are no longer of interest. Decide which family member to “hand-me-down” or where to donate.
  • If a closet is shared between siblings, consider putting a dresser or divider between the sections. Separate spaces will avoid squabbles.
  • Decide which items need to be stored separately, like shoes, hats, or gloves. Use bins and labels in solid colors. Think color coding for fun.
  • Choose how to organize clothes. Perhaps play and sportswear should be separate from school clothes. Perhaps there should be a special area for dress-up choices.
  • For younger children, consider hanging selections as a whole outfits, so the child does not choose mismatches when getting dressed.
  • Create separate places each for books, toys, treasures, and collections. Create safe storage places for instruments or sports equipment.
  • For an older child, arrange an inviting work and study area. Include a desk or counter space with drawers or storage for school supplies, a comfortable chair, and bookshelves.
  • Help establish the good habit of having a “place for everything and everything in its place”. Have children learn to put things away, rather than putting them down. When spaces are cleared and functioning well, the mind is clear to create and have fun.
