Prep Your House for Kitchen Renovation

One Design Place knows that a kitchen renovation is a big process and disrupts the routine for the whole family. You want the end result of the beautiful new kitchen, which will be the heart of your home.

Take these steps to be prepared for the weeks to come:

Set up your temporary kitchen.

  • Set up a 6 foot folding table.
  • Push your refrigerator next to it.
  • Place your Crock-Pot or InstaPot on the table along with coffee pot, toaster oven or hot plate.
  • You can also place a table- top microwave there.
  • Purchase a plastic 4-drawer or shelf organizer and a plain plastic box to place under the table.
  • Select your favorite kitchen utensils and arrange them in the organizer.
  • Add plastic or paper plates, cups, and cutlery to the organizer.
  • Arrange your canned, dried goods and pantry items to the plastic box.
  • Also, place your garbage and recycling containers with extra bags nearby.

Empty and pack all kitchen items as if you were moving.

  • If work will be done in the pantry, empty it as well.

Choose where construction materials will be stored.

  • Your staging area can be either in the garage or another room.
  • Organize and clear the space for the workers to have easy access.

And most important – be flexible and adaptable.

  • During renovation, be prepared because things do come up.
  • There is an ebb and flow to the process.

Keep your eyes on the prize.

  • The goal is a beautiful, functional space.

Here are a few of my favorite “Dump and Go” recipes to prepare in your Crock-Pot or Instapot and keep your family happy during the process. Serve a side green vegetable or salad.

Serve over rice or use French bread for a New Orleans poboy.

Red Beans and Rice

  • 1 lb of red kidney beans
  • 1 lb of smoked turkey or beef sausage
  • 1 pkg chopped frozen onions
  • Ham trimmings
  • 6 Tbl Tony’s Creole seasoning or to taste
  • Water to cover beans

Add the beans, meat, spices and water to your Crock-Pot.
Cover the Crock-Pot and cook on low for 4 to 6 hours.

Cook rice separately.

Chicken Taco Soup

Ingredients:

  • 4-6 boneless chicken breasts or thighs
  • 1 can pinto beans
  • 1 jar salsa
  • 1 can of corn with juice from the can
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup of water
  • 1 packet of taco seasoning
  • Optional: tortilla strips, cilantro avocado and/or cheese.

Add all ingedients, except the cream and optional choices to the Crock-Pot.
Cover and cook on low for 4 to 6 hours.
For InstaPot, pressure cook on high for 30 – 50 minutes.
Once chicken is cooked, remove and shred it with 2 forks.
Stir chicken back into the Crock-Pot and add the heavy cream.
Garnish with your optional choices.
Add salt and pepper to taste.

Enjoy,
Cynthia
