Metals used in bathrooms during 2019 are mostly a brushed gold-tone. For the past 2 decades we have been seeing silver tone light fixtures, faucets, frames, towel bars and shower systems in most homes. A small percentage choose the oil rubbed bronze tones. Some of the very wealthy had gold plated fixtures and there has been some of the old left-over brass from the 90’s. 2019 brings us into a new space where the main stream will begin to have brushed gold tones in their bathroom metals.
This year Black is the new gray. You will see it in picture frames, lamp shades, black and white geometric fabric patterns on shower curtains and more. When the paint industry announced Black Flame as the paint color of the year; we saw a shift in interior paint colors. Black and darker color tones make us feel calm and comforted in the face of the stressful life we live. Is there a better place to de-stress other than our luxurious, comfortable bathroom?
For many years granite has dominated the counter-top scene. Countertops made of quartz rather than granite seems to have started taking over. The word is that Quartz counter-tops are stronger and less porous. Being less porous means that liquids such as water, wine, and oils cannot seep through the surface causing stains or a gathering place for bacteria (quartz does not need to be re-sealed often). The quartz industry has given us many beautiful stone look surfaces and bright whites which is rare in natural granite. But in 2019 we will see many more matte finishes in different colors in the quartz lines.
Many homeowners are opting for shower rooms or wet areas. These areas usually house a shower and a tub. This is a great way to save space and make your bathroom look larger. Putting a freestanding tub inside of a spacious shower is a great way to expand your space. Another way to design a wet area is to have the shower and tub side by side and this area separated from the rest of the bathroom with a glass “wall”. Many people believe that they have to keep a tub in their master bathroom for resale, this is a creative way to have a large shower and still meet the tub requirement.
As we move forward in 2019, we see some of the fashion trends of the 70s resurfacing in different ways. As we know, fashion is cyclical and will return but it usually does not return in the same exact way, for example, we saw lots of geometric wall coverings during the 70s now we’re seeing more geometric fabrics and texture in geometrical tiles. We are also seeing and insurgents or influx of black-and-white styles in tiles, fabric patterns on walls, and in furniture. Patterned tile in all over patterns is one way to bring a touch of vintage. Old dressers that we used to see in the bedroom are now used as vanities in powder rooms or smaller bathrooms.
The world of Kitchen design is fun and interesting for 2019. Brushed brass is the hot new metal of the year. Its always nice to have some metal in the room and with this trend we see it on custom hood trim, small appliances, handles, hardware, outlets, and facets.
Some fun is being had with backsplashes this year with 3-D tiles, funky designs, and mixing warms with cools in your palette. We are seeing texture in our backsplashes, along with pattern and color. Besides paint a backsplash is an easy and inexpensive way to give your kitchen a fresh new look.
We are still seeing the industrial-inspired elements like concrete surfaces and raw materials such as brick, reclaimed wood, and exposed beams. This is a renewed spirit in design it means people are appreciating the beauty of how things are constructed and a growing relationship between form and function.
Wine, wine, wine. We are accommodating a great deal of wine excitement in homes from wine cellars, to built in wine rooms, home bars, and beverage centers. Wine enthusiasts love to show off their collections.
The modern Kitchen Island has taken over as the “Heart of the Home” It is the focal point of the kitchen in many designs. It has beauty, uniqueness, and function. The island performs many functions from prepping food, to serving area, to homework time and everything in between. It can be a great place for storage and organization. If I could have only one custom designed piece in my home it would be my kitchen island. This year they are exciting and fun!
Kitchen storage is fantastic and more and more products are showing up so that we truly have a place for everything and it is easy to put everything in its place. We have built in spice racks, cutlery draws, hidden storage compartments, and tray storage. I have seen the toe kicks used, side space, and drop-down racks from the ceiling. There are ways to use every nook and cranny of your space.
During 2018 we have seen a surge of shaker style cabinetry replacing the traditional styles and Shaker is not going anywhere with beautiful new colors and finishes. The newest trend is frameless European cabinets in many styles and colors. Many of these cabinets have places to organize your things built-in.

The interest rates are threatening to continue rising and the fires, floods, and hurricanes are surely effecting the prices of building materials. Remodeling still adds value to your home.
There is only a slight decline, to 56.8% in 2017 from 57.9% in 2016, in the average payback for 20 common professional remodeling projects in 100 major markets. It is better to wait until a great contractor is available than to use a sub-par tradesman because you are in a hurry to get back to normal. I know it is taxing to deal with living in a temporary situation, such as, living with a friend, living in a trailer in your driveway, living upstairs while the downstairs is being remodeled, or in a hotel but believe me you will be happy if you just wait until someone who really knows what they are doing works on your project. Ultimately, the overall project with run more smoothly and quickly if you wait. You will have less costly mistakes and less items which haunt you forever that you dislike ( like cabinets that you hate, a door swinging in the opposite direction, a paint, a floor that you do not like...).
Before you ever start a remodeling project devise a solid plan. You can hire a designer to help you with floor plans, design details, and finish selections or do it yourself. Either way have a solid plan before you start.
Bottom line :
